ConDiS

Conducting Digital System

Tags: ConDiS Timeline (TM)

May

10.05.17. Make 16 note sequence for each instrument based on the E – Ab scale. If low notes like the E and C# might have to transpose them and use with others in their own register or use bass instruments like the bass clarinet.

Make a register and string maps.

Take the valve out of the Horn and even use microphones.

April

19.04.17. Composition for TSi.

  1. Make 16 sonic ideas for each instrument or instrument group.
  2. Make 16 pitch ideas for each instrument or instrument group.
  3. Link the ideas to the Magic Square either by chance or line them up by feeling.
  4. Use sound strategy such as – Wood, glass, wind, and metal.

Finish writing for Strings, Woodwinds, Horn and Percussion/Piano

Maps:

Composition —-> score – charts – magic square – motif

Graphic instruments —-> Flute – Clarinet – Horn – etc…

Make a compositional graph in Mind Manager.

24.04.17. Reise Kristiansand. Print out reference, papers. Bring tables for

  1. Strings —-> Instructions
  2. Clarinet —-> Instructions
  3. Percussion —–> Instructions
  4. Look at Horn and Piano

Work in Mind Manager and do more cleanup.

Make a new instrumental chart. Total duration 15 – 21 min.

February

23.02.17. Working on Per and Con or ConPerc. Yesterday made cue and prev_cue + start/stop and tap to send and receive on/off messages from ConGlove. Have to try it on today.

Also working with Sigurd Sauer from 13:00 today. Made new illustrations for buttons

  1. B1 = Index finger = Start/Stop from beginning or from the last stopped place.
  2. B2 = Middle finger = tap tempo to set the selected playback tempo. Has to be clicked more than once to get the average tempo of the clicks.
  3. B3 = Ring finger =
  4. B4 = Little finger

Work with Sigurd – Pan object: How to scale the pan? How to control each pan?

24.02.17. Worked on ConPerc doing some touch up including start and stop pause etc. Problem how to do stops that does not start again. Need a stop button that rewinds and waits for play.

Today’s work:

Practice Conducting – Adjust Pan – Find out Digital input from xio sensor – try to find a score following the program.

Work on further developing my score writing. Added audio illustration to the ConPerc score that shows what is sounding or at least showing the dynamics. Had no luck with digital input which still remains a mystery. Have to write to xio- technologies and ask what might be causing this trouble.

About the pan, I have first to decide which movement I wanna use before doing an adjustment. Have to use Magnetometer?

January

03 – 07.01.17. First-week “hjemmekontor” home office. Managed to do a backup of my hard drive and then change the hard drive to SSD. Then I have been installing applications as well as installing new ones. Got new Sibelius 8 and Logic X which should be a big help in my composition process. Worked a bit more on the composition and found out that U have to work on the Ableton Live setup at the same time I am composing. Therefore spent few days working on the setup running into a bunch of unwanted troubles. What I like to be able to do is the following:

Each instrument has it’s direct in and out as well as sending a signal to its panning counterpart.

illus.

10 – 11.01.17. Still dealing with latency problems in M4L. Have to check out if the other Sensor is better. The problem seems to be related to WiFi, sensor, and interaction between M4L and Live. Volume sliders way to slow, get worse with more sliders activated. Got my new mixer up but not yet running. Have to do some wiring/cabling. Did record my Flugelhorn valves, have to do more. Had a meeting with Michael Dutch the Contrabass player. A very good meeting, lots of ideas and learning there. Got some material to read (scores) and listen. Next thing to do is to contact Marianne and get info about Cello. Also, write an email to Michael and ask for a recording session when I have decided which technique I am going to use.

List of things to do:

Michael Dutch -> email on the recording

Espen -> email on the recording

Marianne -> email on the recording

Find out who is playing the following instruments in the TSi.

*Trombone —–>

*Trumpet—–>

French Horn —–>

Flute —–>

Clarinet —–>

*Bassoon —–>

Violin —–>

Viola —–>

All in all 11 players + piano. If I need to reduce then take out those with * (9 players minimum).

Continue with Live setup (mix)

Direct signal (dry instrument signal) goes directly to Group track

Effect signal sends directly to FX Return.

NB! The conductor v.s. sound engineer – write an article no the different view of conductor v.s. sound engineer.

Need also to start the layout of my thesis

These can be compiled into chapters related to my work plan

Conduct ——> Technology ——> Performance ——> Composition ——> Reflections.

What I want to present

  1. Use of Sensors
  2. Conducting tool —-> Technology —-> Musicianship
  3. Composition —-> Technology —-> Conductor

After Skype meeting with Øyvind.

  1. Abstract —-> Introduction = Documental technique from ´90 tallet
  2. A lot has been added here.
  3. Special application for conducting
  4. The most important is how I am using it
  5. Do not think too much about the technical things
  6. Try to write how the Conducting system works or feels
  7. Document on Composition is 20 pages of technical things.
  8. Make rather a documentation on the artistic output how I use the technology for musical performance.
  9. How I use the conductor
  10. What do I want to accomplish musically with ConDiS
  11. What have I accomplished and what not!
  12. Did I get what I was hoping for?
  13. What is missing
  14. How does if it does the ConDiS affect the composition? is there something that I have to do in the composition to get the system to work?
  15. Put much more emphasis on the Artistic part of my research.
  16. Utvikle —-> Styrken er den kunstneriske bruken.

December

05.12.16. Started working at NOTAM with a meeting. Went through my program with Thom and Asbjørn, also had a discussion about next steps. Asbjørn worked on the volume slider and probably solved the “how to memorize”the last position of the hand (glove)? Thom tried to figure out why there is so much latency in my M4L patch. I worked on the panning thing and how to apply that to my program. Worked to about 8:00 in the evening.

06.12.16. Back at NOTAM around 10:00. Asbjørn working on a metronome to calculate conductors tempo and M4L. He is also working on a patch that should synchronize the conductor’s score and Ableton Live timeline. Seemingly found a way to jump back and forth in needed to be in synchronization. I and Thom spent most of the time debugging. Found out that most likely my computer needs to be rebuilt. Should do that when back to Trondheim. Should also buy an SSD harddisk to replace the one I have on my computer. Check out prisguide.no Also should think carefully about the connectors and probably use molex to solve that problem. At the end of the day, Asbjørn sent me his work on the metronome and score sync. Ath! Samsung 850 EVO 500GB.

To do: Hook up Asbjørns patches to my program!

Move all files (objects) that I use from Google folder to the internal disk. Hook up the programming device. Clean up my Max program.

Have to make a patch that selects Volume, Pan, Fx, (like I have in Vol). Probably I can use PAN instead of Vol in

patch live_set tracks $1 mixer_device volume

patch live_set tracks $1 mixer_device pan?

not working since the pan thing is old-time MIDI.

07.12.16. Back around 10:30. Started to work on the volume control patch by intergrading Asbjørns patch to mine. Vent very well and I had it up and running after lunch (one track version). Then went to look at the metronome that Asbjørn worked on yesterday. Managed to intergrade it to my con-direction patch only to find out that it would be probably better to use small buttons instead of pressure sensors. Might be making one tomorrow.  Looked at the panning object and found a way to link that to my accelerator and to circle. Still, have to adjust many parameters to make it turn “the right” way. Meaning that when holding hand straight out the pan should be in the middle position

08.12.16. At work before 10:00. Worked on the pan object the whole day. With a big help from Thom managed to get it to work so that the conductor can see the 4 group panning values. Activate them (one at a time) and take over control. Still, have to find out how to get them back to automation when conductin control is turned off. Having trouble communicating in M4L. Have to clean up my computer!

09.12.16. Started around 10:15. Having trouble with communication in the pan-selector. When I choose track 1 I do get the controlling track 4 activated. Very interesting trouble since it kind of does not make any sense. Also the condition of my laptop not making it easier, with lots of crashes.

November

08.11.16. Did work on DB instructions many who also will be useful for the other string instruments. Have to make decisions on how to notate use of superball, hands, nails e.t.c.

Illus.:

Did get going with finger design also useful for conducting instructions?

09.11.16. Home office reading Gunther Schuller “The Complete Conductor” with lots of highlighting. Tried out OSC- route instead of jcom.oscroute to find out if it had a better response. Unfortunately not a big difference. Have to think about the possibility to control Live via Max.

10.11.16. Worked on descript of my program for NOTAM. Emailed 15 pages to Notto, have a Skype meeting tomorrow.

Worked on Ext. notation for DB. Wrote emails to Diane, Ingibjorg, Notto, and PKU about March seminar.

17.11.16. Skriveseminar

Illus. about narrative structure…

Why I did come up with the Glove in historical context.

Empirical – Theory

Argument ————–chapter ——————-conclusion.

Introduction to my research.

Historic context – Its place historically how it falls in place with the evolution of the conductor’s job. with a special focus on the conductor.

Technological context – carrying out the technological part of my research

Practical matter – How I use my research or the digital glove for my music composition. Writing new composition.

Use Theory to understand Empiric

Theory – method – Empiric

Theory – Tests – Empiric. -> is the theory correct? -> New theory -> New Empiric.

Experiments (tests) can lead to new theories.

Choose your own enemies but do not have too many.

Talk to text – In this book NN talks about…

Focus on fewer items and write about them thoroughly

The argument is partial -> Vitenskap – Science.

17.11.16. Need to record some sounds and put them into Live to make examples on how the can change with the use of Fx. Have to explain both how these changes of sounds are written into the Program and also who the conductor can process them in real-time.

There are different theories in progress with conductors, for example how accurately they should follow for marks in the score, e.g. tempo, strength … When does a cresc… start and how strong should it be. How much ritardando should be out there. is a fortissimo (FF) the same in Mozart as in Beethoven or Boulez. Write these questions and other similar questions to conductors such as Szilway, Gupta, Winnes, Ilan, and D.Bjarnason more…

18.11.16. In contact with NOTAM. Sending Ableton Live files as well as the Track-setup patch. Tried to use Collect and Save, had to do brush up my memory and knowledge in Ableton Live.

13:00 Meeting of the IM in Olavshallen discussing and introducing the FoU and documents from various groups. Very informative meeting, unfortunately, had to leave early.

21.11.16. Home office + office got some mail from Asbjørn at NOTAM. The files sent on Friday and let’s say the Live project had absolutely all the collected files missing. Started to work further on my paper intended for ICMC, MOCO, and NIME. Was able to do some work although a lot of time used to find out how to use EndNote and link it to Word/Pages. Also connection map Fitz sent to NOTAM.

22.11.16. Woke up in the middle of the night (04:00) and started to learn more about EndNote. Vent through the YouTube tutorials and did some discovery. Still, have to find out how to import files from the internet to my EndNote library. At work did prepare few pages intended for NOTAM explaining the build-up of the ConDiS system. Also used the time to learn more about Apple pages.

23.11.16. Working on documentation, preparing a paper to be submitted to NIME, ICMC, and MOCO. Have written a substantial text about the background history of conducting. Have to get more into the research part i.e. the technical things. Also, need to do some graphics on my tests like how the sensor is working. Why I choose to use this or that. Why I did go away from the gesture recognition to more simple and straightforward old MIDI messages. Should mention Wayne Siegels advise that sometimes the new things are not totally there and simpler and older things are then more reliable. Also, other ideas such as face recognition using Kinect.

October

12.10.16. Meeting with Øyvind were we did go through my progress and what to do. Did get some advice about…

20.10.16. Seminar Architecture building. notes about a reading of a PKU dissertation paper Stefan Ø? leaves questions like For whom is it aimed for? Uses lots of names citations and quotations. Very complex academic language. Where is his voice? Could have used much more of his own practice with examples. Shut up and play!

Different methods – different tools we have today. What is the role of Theory? Create new concepts: add a drawing of a fish

Extroverted – how your own idea turns out.

September

06.09.16. Clarinet. Studying extended clarinet technique trying to find the best solution to write in the score. Not that many things to do but still have not filled it up with all necessary objects.

Illus. of  WW group.

07.09.16. Took a closer look at the technical part of ConDiS i.e. how surround can work in Ableton Live and how much CPU I might be using. At first sight, the XY node object might be the solution quite fancy but not using too much CPU. This also brings up the question: “Is there a possibility to have an individual panning for each instrumental group?”

ADD an illustration

That would allow the conductor to take over the pan when he likes.

More thoughts about the conductor control. Is it possible to have each instrument with individual volume control while the conductor is controlling the overall balance between groups i.e. WW, Brass, Perc., Strings?

Illustration follows:

08.09.16. Worked on a new bread-board for the sensor. Tried to do the soldering from the other side in the wake hope that it would be more stable. After a days work with lots of frustration it was a total failure. When the sensor was turned on I got no blue light meaning there was no circuit. Have to find out tomorrow what went wrong.

09.09.16. Worked on notation for Double BAss. Found a very good page by Dimitry Timoteev on YouTube. Will be looking at more. Also looked at Heather Rouche, Clarinet page.

12.09.16. Concert with flutist Trine Knutsen playing Kaia Saariaho solo flute piece. Got the score in the mail.

13.09.16. Looked at the flute score and Kaia´s notation. Very useful for my composition i.e. the notation on various extended techniques.

15-25.09.16. Have to tell my traveling story although not related to my research.

Travel to Iceland to get personal things, – Books, Compositions, CD´s etc. Filled a van we bought in Iceland it is heavily loaded. Took 3-4 days to pack and clear the storage (have to remember to call them and quit the rent). Left Reykjavik Tuesday the 21.09 at approx 14:00 hours. Drow all the way to Høfn in Hornafjørdur and stayed over at friends Johann and Kristin. Johann is the headmaster of the music school over there. Had a long conversation about the meaning of life, old times at the Reykjavik College of Music and how music education has changed since then. Very positive changes. Left early in the morning Wednesday to Seydisfjørdur. The weather forecast was bad for the afternoon so I did my best to get going early. Although had to go and see Johann´s music school before heading my way. It had already started raining when I finally had seen the whole building of the school.

Thought this would be my last trip. The weather got worse and worse. I drove Hafnarskridur and thought that the rocks in the mountainside would fall on my vehicle.  The roadside was covered with falling rocks. After that, I had to drive the muddy road of Berufjørdur, heavy car in a heavy mud in all that rain. Then Steingrimsfjørdur, Faskrudsfjørdur, Talknafjørdur with increasing wind in every fjørd. Finally Fjardarheidi, the scariest road on earth in heavy rain, heavy wind and heavy fog. Don´t know how, but made it all the way to the ferry Smyrill/Norrøna that was waiting at the Siglufjørdur harbor. At that time approx 18:00 o´clock the weather was getting so bad that scheduled departure of the ferry at 20:00 was delayed till 09:00 the next morning.

Woke up late the morning after around 11:00, the ferry had already left harbor although weather still was bad. And what a way to wake up. In a tiny sleeping bag cabin, about 3sq meters in size shared with 5 others in 3 double deck beds. Had a hell of a hangover and worst of all, was very seasick xxx  Nothing is like being seasick. It is like being totally sucked out of energy. Even beer or snaps cannot solve that problem. Fortunately, passengers that I met had and saw my pain became the “merciful Samaritan” and informed me that I could get tablets from the reception that would kill my sickness.

24.09.16. Wonderful news from the Norwegian Culture Fund!

30.09.16. Meeting with Espen Aalver from the Trondheim Sinfonietta to get instructions on percussion technique and notation. Very useful info. that will become an important part of my composition.
