07.03 Long time no writing. Have been busy finding both preparing for the February 8-10 seminar #4 where I did go through my process and showed a short video about making of the ConGlove as well as short cuts from the first two concerts using the ConDiS system. Then a short workshop where I tried to explain and have five of the participants go through the gestures that a conductor has to make to conduct. Raising the question “How comfortable does it feel?”, How many information can we deal with at the same time? Is there another simpler way? What is the musical addition of the ConDiS, Does it change the way I do compose?
Things to think about:
Musical expressions: Conductors are human, therefore they do have a different personality, different mentality, different gestures.
How can I make ConDiS so it can be used by various types of conductors? Those with big gestures, those with small gestures, those that have clear conducting gestures, those that use elaborate gestures etc…
When using natural gestures meaning conducting gestures that are commonly used by conductors such as lifting your arm for more volume, or moving your arm in and out there can easily be a misunderstanding between the conductor and the performer’s whether the conductor is conducting them the human players or the ConDiS system. Probably can be solved through rehearsals or by the conductor avoiding eye contact or another kind of contact with the players.
Things that I have solved.
Possibilities of various finger combinations to indicate what to be controlled i.e. volume, pan, effects etc. and what tracks to activate.
Possibilities to increase and decrease volume. In this version by raising and lowering the arm wearing the glove. This needs to be fine-tuned.
Possibilities to move the sound in air by waving the glove arm in circles.
Possibilities to turn things on and off.
What needs to be done:
When the conductor decides to increase/decrease the volume the volume meter does not start at the volume that is playing in the score making unwanted sudden volume changes.
To solve this I have to make a smoothing patch that gradually increases, decreases the volume.
Have to make a cal
To do: Write expression marks both in score and Max/MSP
Gesture recognition for score following and tempo.
Smoother for Volume and Pan
